A funeral mass will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, December 2nd at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Boca Raton, FL. A “Celebration of Life” will follow the mass at the Mercy Center at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jerry’s life. Charlie Tadge
1931-2016
TADGE, Charles H., age 85, formerly of Dayton and Cincinnati, of Cleveland, died Thursday, December 22, 2016. He was born on November 25, 1931 in Dayton, OH, a son of the late Charles Nelson and Anna Lecetta (Middlestetter) Tadge. He was a 1949 graduate of Northridge High School, University of Cincinnati with a BS in Industrial Management in 1954. He also attended Purdue University, post graduate studies in Agronomy Turfgrass Management. Charles served in the US Army during the Korean War, and was a 1st Lt. and Commander of a Nike Missle Battery in CA. He worked 44 years as a golf course Superintendant at several well known courses, including; Miami Valley Golf Club, Dayton, OH, Mayfield Country Club of South Euclid, OH. Charles concluded his career with the Hamilton County Parks District, having retired from the Vineyard Golf Club in February of 2002. He also held various positions in professional organizations such as President of the Golf Course Superintendants Assoc. of America in 1979, President GCSA of Miami Valley in 1984, President of the Northern Ohio GCSA from 1972-73, and Midwest Regional Turf Foundation in 1968, the Ohio Turf Foundation in 1968, Sec./Treas. Of the Greater Cinti GCSA from 1992-2002. He was elected to the GCGCSA Hall of Fame in 2015 and has an annual scholarship in his name recognizing his service to the industry. He spoke at many conferences and meetings in USA, Canada, Mexico, Scotland, and England. He also served as a course rater for Cinti Golf Assoc. He served on Golf Magazine panel to select the “top 100” courses in the US. He played over 70 of the “Top 100” courses and played in all 50 states and DC. Charles worked as a volunteer and grounds crew member at The Masters from 2003 to 2008, and was finally nominated to the Northern Ohio Golf Hall of Fame. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Carolyn Tadge (Knotts) in 2015. Survived by 2 sons Erik R. (Lori) Tadge of Perry, OH, and Stephen D. (Judy) Tadge of Hillsborough, NC, 5 grandchildren Kevin Tadge, Megan Tadge, Kelly Tadge, Bryan Tadge and Kyle Winner. Lawrence, Kan. (Oct. 18, 2016) – Membership engagement and growth, advocacy efforts and an upcoming best management practices guide were among the key topics of the 2016 Chapter Delegates Meeting. The 82 delegates from 84 chapters also heard from nominees for the 2017 GCSAA Board of Directors. The two-day meeting, held Oct. 11-12 in Kansas City, Mo., and at GCSAA headquarters in Lawrence, Kan., also offered delegates the chance to discuss issues and provide input in small group sessions and during a "town hall" session.
While one third of attendees were first-time delegates, many of the veteran delegates return for the opportunity to make a difference for the association and profession.
"It's good to come and meet new people," said Sean Wilson, CGCS at The Club at Falcon Point and delegate for the South Texas GCSA. "You feel like you are truly a part of changing things for the better."
For five-time delegate T.A. Barker, CGCS at Fore Lakes Golf Course and a member of the Intermountain GCSA, the annual delegates meeting allows him to hear about the different challenges and the common concerns superintendents face around the country.
"We are all a family," Barker said. "We come here facing different issues, but we are a family and we come together to help each other out."
The event opened with updates from GCSAA President Peter J. Grass, CGCS, and GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans, as well as check presentations to chapters that participated in Rounds 4 Research in 2016. The second day offered staff presentations on key initiatives, including:
The business portion of the delegates meeting concluded with presentations from and breakout sessions with the candidates for the 2017 board. The election will take place on Feb. 9 at the GCSAA Annual Meeting in Orlando.
A federal judge on Tuesday blocked an Obama administration rule to extend mandatory overtime pay to more than 4 million workers from taking effect, imperiling one of the outgoing president's signature achievements for boosting wages.
U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant in Sherman, Texas, agreed with 21 states and a coalition of business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, that the rule is unlawful and granted their motion for a nationwide injunction. It was to take effect Dec. 1.
The rule would have doubled to $47,500 the maximum salary a worker can earn and still be eligible for mandatory overtime pay.
The states and business groups claimed in lawsuits filed in September that were later consolidated that the drastic increase in the salary threshold was arbitrary.
Mazzant, who was appointed by President Obama, held that the rule runs counter to the federal law that governs who is eligible for overtime. The law does not allow the Labor Department to determine eligibility based only on salary levels, Mazzant said.
The 2016 Annual Meeting was held October 3rd at AJ Jolly Golf Course in Alexandria, Kentucky. President Tony Dierkers gave a brief rundown of the affairs of the association over the past year. Financially the association is in very good shape with the current bank and investment balances being in line with the past 10 years. At the meeting the 2 Board Trustee spots that were being vacated by President Dierkers and 3-year commercial representative Jeff Helvie of Harells needed to be filled. Those in attendance elected Jason Brown of Century Equipment to become the commercial representative. Filling the other trustee spot will be T.J. Collins of The World of Golf. Thanks to both of these gentlemen for stepping up to serve the association. The newly elected Board convened to nominate the officers of the board. Tim Mason of AJ Jolly was unanimously elected to be President for the upcoming year. Tim Kelly of Weatherington CC was pegged to serve as Vice President and Steve Ohl will continue as Secretary Treasurer.
At the conclusion of ‘official’ business, Greg Guynan was introduced to present the 2016 Hall of Fame Inductees. Greg, whom had a very personal connection with this year’s inductees provided interesting recollections and information on all 4 of the inductees and their contribution to the profession. This year’s class included Jim Glazier, Cal Gruber, Dick Craig and Marion Mendenhall. The Hall Of Fame committee is headed up by Sean Walters and I would be remiss if I didn’t thank him yet again. I hope he and the rest of the committee realize how much their efforts are appreciated.
We were fortunate enough to have Mike Mendenhall, son of Marion, on hand to accept on behalf of his father. What this professional organization was on the local level and what it can be was evident in his gratitude for this honor. Listening to Mike talk it became apparent why attendance at the local meetings is important. Through this interaction and discussion with your peers, you get the best ideas on what can help you in both your professional and personal lives.
Following the annual meeting and lunch the attendees headed out for 18 holes of golf with a cash skins game. There were 7 skins out with Jeff Helvie and Tony Weaver each winning 2 skins with Scott DeLand, Tim Glynn and Sean Walter winning one each. Thanks to Harry Helsel for running the game.
