Charlie Tadge

1931-2016

TADGE, Charles H., age 85, formerly of Dayton and Cincinnati, of Cleveland, died Thursday, December 22, 2016. He was born on November 25, 1931 in Dayton, OH, a son of the late Charles Nelson and Anna Lecetta (Middlestetter) Tadge. He was a 1949 graduate of Northridge High School, University of Cincinnati with a BS in Industrial Management in 1954. He also attended Purdue University, post graduate studies in Agronomy Turfgrass Management. Charles served in the US Army during the Korean War, and was a 1st Lt. and Commander of a Nike Missle Battery in CA. He worked 44 years as a golf course Superintendant at several well known courses, including; Miami Valley Golf Club, Dayton, OH, Mayfield Country Club of South Euclid, OH. Charles concluded his career with the Hamilton County Parks District, having retired from the Vineyard Golf Club in February of 2002. He also held various positions in professional organizations such as President of the Golf Course Superintendants Assoc. of America in 1979, President GCSA of Miami Valley in 1984, President of the Northern Ohio GCSA from 1972-73, and Midwest Regional Turf Foundation in 1968, the Ohio Turf Foundation in 1968, Sec./Treas. Of the Greater Cinti GCSA from 1992-2002. He was elected to the GCGCSA Hall of Fame in 2015 and has an annual scholarship in his name recognizing his service to the industry.  He spoke at many conferences and meetings in USA, Canada, Mexico, Scotland, and England. He also served as a course rater for Cinti Golf Assoc. He served on Golf Magazine panel to select the “top 100” courses in the US. He played over 70 of the “Top 100” courses and played in all 50 states and DC. Charles worked as a volunteer and grounds crew member at The Masters from 2003 to 2008, and was finally nominated to the Northern Ohio Golf Hall of Fame. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Carolyn Tadge (Knotts) in 2015. Survived by 2 sons Erik R. (Lori) Tadge of Perry, OH, and Stephen D. (Judy) Tadge of Hillsborough, NC, 5 grandchildren Kevin Tadge, Megan Tadge, Kelly Tadge, Bryan Tadge and Kyle Winner.   In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve 17876 St. Clair Ave. Cleveland, OH 44110, www.hospicewr.org.
